Portraiture & Lighting
I spent some time in the studio a few days ago practicing portraiture, lighting, and just photographing for fun with my friend Lauren.
We’re both advertising photo majors so a little practicing would do us good and two heads always think better than one.
Originally Lauren wanted to do something more edgy and I wanted to do something softer and simple. We played around with different lighting set ups, styling, and make up looks to try and emulate some of our inspiration photographs.
My favourite from the set are those images I photographed inspired by the beauty shots on the John Frieda Hair Color Collection. I think they add a compromise between simplicity and edgy beauty. So I gave Lauren a silver and black smokey eye and asked her to swing her long golden locks back and forth till we got the image above.
Practice makes for better images!

Snapshots and the Van
Harlan, my roommate recently just discovered these 20+ expired disposable film cameras in his parents home. Our mission, finish them all!
I think we’re at camera number four or five by now. He’s taken them to parties, shopping, film sets, 4am food missions, and on our obnoxious van rides to the thrift stores for prop shopping.
- In the past weeks we’ve gone hiking in the RIT woods and discovered a bunch of mini Indian style tepees and a walkway filled with trees that look like sad people; we named it spookyville.
- We’ve documented the inside and out of our Colony apartment; clutter, American flag and Bailey the cute, yet secretly evil dog we attempted to babysit for a day and almost bit Harlans face off.
- We attended the overly packed, disappointingly hyped opening of the Rochester Mighty Taco. Left with a tasteless $2 burrito and a funny photo
- Left a camera at a party and quietly snuck into the apartment the next morning to recover it. Took it to CVS to be shamelessly developed as we ate McDonalds. When we later saw them we laughed over the faces our friends made into the camera
- We attained proof of our loyal consumption of starbucks coffee and treats, I’ll take another frappe please.
- And of course, none of this would be true unless if there was proof on Facebook. So we uploaded, tagged, and embarrassed our friends.
